Stainless Steel Channels & Angles: Forming Methods, Sizes & Selection
Stainless structural sections are specified where a carbon steel section would corrode — process platforms, marine walkways, food and pharmaceutical plant frames, and architectural work. How the section is made matters more in stainless than in carbon steel, because hot rolling is far less widely available.
Three Ways a Stainless Section Is Made
Press-formed (brake-formed) sections are bent from plate on a press brake. They offer the widest size range, custom dimensions and short lead times, with a generous inner bend radius. Laser-fused sections are laser welded from plate components, giving sharp corners, tight tolerances and a narrow heat-affected zone. Hot rolled sections are rolled from bloom like carbon steel, but the stainless size range is limited and lead times are long. Most stainless channels and angles supplied in India are press-formed or laser-fused.
Angles: Equal and Unequal
Equal angles run 20×20×3 mm through 200×200×20 mm; unequal angles from 30×20×3 mm to 200×150×15 mm. Dimensional standards are EN 10056-1 for European practice and IS 808 for Indian. Angles are used for framing, edge protection, bracing and supports where a bolted or welded connection carries the load.
Channels: C and U Profiles
Channels run 50×25 mm to 400×100 mm. A press-formed channel has parallel flanges of uniform thickness, which makes its weight per metre straightforward to calculate; a hot rolled ISMC channel has tapered flanges and a thicker web, so its weight differs from a formed section of the same nominal size. Confirm which you are buying when comparing weights or prices.
Grade Selection
304/304L covers general atmospheric and indoor structural work. 316/316L is specified for coastal, marine and chloride-bearing environments, and for food and pharmaceutical plant where cleaning chemicals are aggressive. Duplex 2205 offers roughly double the yield strength of 304, which allows a lighter section for the same load, plus superior chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance.
Finish and Fabrication
Sections are supplied No.1 (hot rolled, annealed and pickled) as standard, with 2B, No.4 brushed and mirror polish available for visible architectural work. Cutting, drilling, notching and welding are available in-house. Where a section is welded, pickling and passivation of the weld restores corrosion resistance — specify it at enquiry stage if the environment is aggressive.
